With your free, personal My Social Security account, at the official SSA.gov website, you can receive personalized estimates of future benefits (often not as accurate, however, as those provided by MaxiFi Planner) based on your real earnings, see your latest Statement, and review your earnings history. This account also allows you to request a replacement Social Security Card or check the status of an application.
Setting up this free account is recommended by financial professionals everywhere because it is an important way to assure that all of your SS information is correct and gives you an easy way to monitor your account and protect your information. And setting up a My Social Security account only takes five or ten minutes. Each spouse will need to set up his or her own account.
Once this account is created, you can view your earnings record and download a file (called an XML file) of this record and import it into MaxiFi Planner when you are ready to enter your earnings history.
The whole process—creating a My Social Security account, downloading earnings history, importing it into MaxiFi Planner—can be completed in ten minutes in most cases and is much less time consuming than looking for old Social Security statements and typing in each year's earnings manually.
It is not a good idea to ball park guess at your earnings history because you want the model you are building to be accurate and SS benefits are an extremely important aspect of your planning model.
