Social Security Set up FAQ

What if I am married but older than 60? Can I see my widower benefit?

If your marital status is married, you cannot enter spousal or widow(er)'s benefits from a past marriage. But since you know the amount of the benefit from the past marriage either because your receiving it or because SSA informed you of that benefit amount, you can simply compare it to other available benefits as calculated by the software and take whichever is larger at a given time.

To see your maximized benefit to compare it to, run a maximization report (I would for this purpose toggle to NO all of the maximization settings except the first one, Social Security).

You wouldn't be able to take a widower benefit and your own benefit at the same time.
